  Chapter 1

As Dena Gysler ran the vacuum cleaner across yet another office on the sixth floor of the Jones Savings and Loan Building, she sighed. Working for a banker was not on her top ten list of exciting jobs, but when she’d arrived in Los Angeles five years prior, weary, and desperate for employment, it was the only thing she could find and well, it paid good enough, so she’d stayed. Besides, after what she’d been through, she wasn’t much of a people person. The fact that she worked the entire floor alone gave her a bit of peace.

And that included the office of Chandler Jones himself. The owner of the company. The guy was a hunk for sure, and he knew it. His ego was easily the size of the winning pumpkin in the fall harvest festival. Giggling at the thought, Dena guided her vacuum diligently across the floor, being careful to make straight lines over the cheap industrial carpet. Heaven forbid there be a crooked stroke to be found.

Finished and making great time, she turned off the vacuum and headed for the office of the big boss himself. He was sure to be there. He always was. Dena had learned to save his office for last each night because he was constantly the final one to leave and she hated to disturb him. Not that he’d ever acknowledged her lowly existence, anyway.

She rounded the corner with her cleaning cart and vacuum in tow and sure enough, there he was, raking a hand through his light brown hair, face stuck to the computer monitor like super glue. The stubble on his chin, although rather attractive, attested to the fact that he hadn’t been home to shower and change the previous night. That and the fact that he was still wearing the same expensive black suit he’d worn the day before. Only now his tie had been loosened, and his jacket hung over the back of his chair. Did the man even eat? Surely, he’d gone to the bathroom to freshen up? Men like Chandler Jones didn’t stink. They were born smelling fresh and woodsy. Yeah okay.

The man would wear himself right out of his seat if he didn’t get some sleep soon. She checked her phone for the time. It was after six. Sliding it back into her pocket she sighed and watched him for a moment before heading in. He wouldn’t notice.

On his desk sat a bottle of pain relievers and a full cup of coffee to wash them down. As far as she could tell, that was what he lived on. And he didn’t need to look at her for her to notice that his eyes were so bloodshot there was more red than blue in them.

An entire building full of employees had left for the night, but the CEO and owner was still at his desk, pecking away at his computer keyboard. What could be all so important that he never left the place?

Ugh. It was going to be another long night for her. She would have to come back later to vacuum, but at least she could take out the trash and dust the shelves.

She pushed her cart into the room, and the man didn’t even look away from his screen. After five years of working for the guy, he had no idea she existed. Had never even glanced in her direction. Not even a small dismissive wave of the hand t
o let her know he was alive. Nothing. She was no better than the cockroaches that came out at night to scurry for leftover crumbs after every sensible person had gone home.

What did she have to complain about, anyway? It wasn’t like she had someone to go home to besides her cat. She’d already committed herself to a life of celibacy. And after Stanford, she’d rather not deal with men in any capacity, ever. She’d have tried to join the convent if she weren’t afraid the nuns would push her away, too. Oh well, she’d never really looked good in black anyway.

“Chandler!” a familiar voice squealed as a woman ran into the room in her red spiked heels and way too tight mini. Chelsea Kinnion. Snob extraordinaire.

Dena continued to dust the large bookshelves that lined the man’s walls. She wasn’t exactly sure what the girl did for the company, or if she even worked for them. Dena had never cleaned an office with Chelsea’s name on it, but the girl was always floating around the place in the evenings pretending like she was CEO or something. And that high and mighty walk of hers, like she was better than everyone else. Annoying didn’t remotely describe the girl. Her whiney voice alone tipped that scale upside down and back again. The fact that she was Chandler’s girlfriend made matters even worse.

Chandler looked up with a smile. “Chelsea. Just the girl I wanted to see. You can still make it for the conference this weekend, right?”

The overly skinny, perfectly complexioned, flawless blonde gave him a blank stare. “Conference? Chandler, what conference?”

“Come on, Chels.” He placed his hands on the table and leaned back in his chair. “It’s the same one we always have. The business conference. And the only vacation I get the entire year. I’ve been working nonstop just so I can get away without having to do any work over the weekend.”

“It’s this weekend? Are you sure?”

Dena continued to dust, but her attention was tuned into the drama behind her. It was none of her business, still, what was life without a bit of juicy drama? There sure wasn’t anything going on in her neck of the woods.

“Of course, I’m sure. It’s the same time every year. Last weekend in May. That’s this weekend.”

“But I told you about my mother. She’s not doing well. Remember? This weekend I made plans to go out and see her.” The woman pulled out her pouty face. “You know how important she is to me.”

Dena wrinkled her nose at Chelsea. The girl didn’t have an ounce of morals in her skinny little body. If her mother was sick, she sure wasn’t acting like it.

“Come on Chels. Reschedule. Your mom―”

“She’s dying, Chandler. The doctor says she could go any day.”

Chandler’s entire demeanor changed instantly to one of compassion. “She is? Oh, Chels, I’m so sorry.”

Oh, come on. Don’t fall for the old ‘my mother is dying’ scam. Look at her, Chandler. Not even a tear in her eyes. Dena rolled her eyes and continued to dust. With neither of them acknowledging her presence, she was like a fly on the wall of a daytime soap opera.

“It’s okay. We knew it would happen sooner or later.”

“You go see your mother. I’ll figure out what to do without you.” Chandler sat up in his chair and stared out the window. “Where am I going to find someone to go with me on such short notice, though?”

Dena took the opportunity to grab the man’s trash. As much as she enjoyed soap operas, this was one she’d like to press the pause button on. She didn’t know why but she just didn’t believe a single word that came out of the woman’s mouth. Perhaps because everything that protruded from it stank.

“I don’t know, Chandler. But this might be my last chance to see her. I have to go.”

“Yeah, you’re right. You should be with your mother.”

Dena ducked in between them and reached out to grab the waste basket liner. And of course, as if she were a ghost, the two of them looked right through her. The oxygen level was at an all-time low, and Dena was more than ready to get out of there. The two love-birds stood suspended in time, or so it seemed.

Dena grabbed hold of the liner, but before she knew it, her shoe flipped out right from under her, and she fell forward. Gliding through the air, did a neat kind of stop drop and roll and landed hard on her bottom with the liner still in her grasp.

  “Ouch!”

The spell broke. All eyes turned to Dena as the lovebirds finally noticed her sitting on the ground amidst the pile of rubbish. Her shoe lay sideways, untied, with her Dr. Scholl’s inserts flopped out to the side. She must have tripped over her own lace.

A uniquely smelling odor wafted up to her nostrils, and she looked down.

Who put coffee grounds in the wastebasket?

She stared up angrily as she did her best to wipe the wet gritty mess from her black work pants. Her face turned a billion shades of red. She didn’t have to see it to know. The heat burned so hot an egg could be fried on her forehead.

Chandler peered at her only a second longer and then looked back up to Chelsea. Without missing a beat, he said, “So, what should I do?”

Don’t worry about me down here. I don’t think anything is broken. Except for possibly my hip bone.

“There you go.” Chelsea laughed. “Why don’t you bring her.” She pointed down at Dena still sitting on the floor rubbing her sore bottom.

  “Her?” His nose wrinkled.

Hey now. No need to get an attitude. Dena gaped at them wondering how in the world she had become the main topic of conversation. Had it been a soap opera, it would have been the perfect time to switch to a commercial break.

“She’s the help.” Chandler pointed his finger at Dena. “Chelsea, come on. This is a big weekend for me. I can’t just show up at the biggest conference of the year with the cleaning lady on my arm.”

Slowly, Dena got to her knees, rubbed at the wet mess that clumped on her pant leg, picked up the trash from the floor, and grabbed her shoe. Ugh. She smelled like the dumpster behind a coffee house.

After further inspection, she pulled her shoe back on and tied it in a double knot to prevent further damage to her body or current level of self-esteem.

CHANDLER JONES LEANED back, folded his hands in front of him and stared across his desk at his girlfriend. It wasn’t the first time Chelsea had let him down. In fact, he had no idea why he put up with the girl to begin with. The two of them had absolutely nothing in common. Well, unless he counted money and family. He and Chelsea were equally rich. His gained by hard work, hers the old-fashioned way. Her daddy.

They had known each other since high school and to be fair, he dated her because she was safe. Annoying, selfish, irritating, and snobbish, but she was safe.

At that moment, Chandler didn’t need safe. He needed reliable. A quality she did not possess.

To be fair, her mother was ill. She had been for quite some time, but why did Chelsea have to choose the most important weekend of the year to see her? Immediately he was ashamed he’d even thought that way. Miss Paula had always been good to him, and he had no right to keep her daughter away from her at a time like this. He’d just have to find another way.

He stared down at the woman scurrying around on the floor like a cockroach and assessed his situation. He needed a date for the conference, and she was as good as any. In fact, she was kinda cute in an odd sort of way. Her dark hair that bobbed around her back with each movement of her head made him think of the tail of the cocker spaniel his mother owned when he was a child. And almost as frisky.

He rubbed his day-old scruff as he probed the possibilities. She was a little on the thick side, but he had to admit, she was curvy in all the right places. Her full pouty lips, sea blue eyes, tiny button nose. Not too bad. He could make it work for a weekend if he had to.

“On second thought, that’s a great idea, Chelsea.”

“You’re not serious?” Chelsea huffed as she stared down at the girl who crawled around the floor gathering up the trash.

“Why not? You think I shoul
d be the only one there without a date?”

“But she’s―” Chelsea looked back down at the girl who was now on her knees wiping the coffee grounds from her clothes. She covered her nose as if assaulted by a horrifying smell.

So maybe it wasn’t the best idea to throw coffee grounds into the wastebasket, but if Candy, his secretary, hadn’t called in late again, that would never have happened. His secretary’s reoccurring tardiness was the least of his worries at the moment. His priority was to find a date for the conference and fast.

Chandler walked around the desk and held a hand out to the woman. “What’s your name?”

The woman looked up at him like he was out of his mind and then turned around as if to see if there was someone else sitting on his office floor. She pointed to her chest. “Me?”

Disgusted, Chelsea stormed out of the office. “You’ll be a laughing stock, Chandler Jones.”

Chandler shook his head. He owned the company. No one would laugh at him. If they did, he’d just fire them.

“Chandler Jones.” He offered his hand once more. Still, she stared at him.

Finally, as if coming out of some kind of daze, she glanced around the room and then back to him and his outstretched hand.

“Yep just you and me. What’s your name?” He dropped his hand, as it seemed to him, she was not going to take it.

“Dena.” Their eyes held for just a moment before she looked away and picked herself up from the floor.

“Why don’t you sit down for a moment? It looks like you might have really hurt yourself with that fall.”

  Her face flushed.

Now I’ve gone and embarrassed her.

He’d never been good with knowing the right thing to say around women. That was why he’d dated Chelsea since high school. The two of them were a perfect match. She was more of the take-charge one. She handled everything. All he had to do was show up. And he didn’t have to entertain her. She did, well, whatever it was she did. She didn’t need him constantly around holding her hand. And now here he was, with this interesting creature in front of him and he had no idea what to do.

Hold up, dude. She’s the cleaning lady. He pushed the thought away. What did it matter if she was the company, custodian?
